After what felt like an eternity of avoiding certain foods, extra work when brushing your teeth, and attending frequent adjustment appointments, the day is finally here – it’s time to get your braces taken off! As exciting as it may be, it might also feel a bit strange. Over the past couple of years, your braces were essentially a part of you, after all, so it may take some time to adjust to life without braces. So, what can you expect with braces removal in Uptown New Orleans? Read on to find out!

Taking Off the Braces

Braces are actually made to be removed quite easily. Your dentist will use an instrument specially designed for this service to gently pop the brackets off of your teeth. Because this device works to find the weakest points of your braces, it makes the removal quick and painless. After the brackets and wires are gone, the dentist will buff any adhesive that may be lingering on your teeth.

Many patients feel nervous about getting their braces removed, but the process should be over before you know it!

The Dentist’s Examination

Once the braces have come off, your dentist will:

  • Examine your teeth
  • Give them a thorough polish
  • Take final X-rays and photographs
  • Design your retainer

Then, you’ll be free to enjoy your newly straightened pearly whites!

Recovery

It’s common for patients to experience minor swelling in their gums after their braces have been taken off. However, this should subside after 48 hours at the most. Your gums may bleed slightly when brushing, but do NOT avoid brushing because of this! Brushing actually works to reduce the inflammation. You might also experience tooth sensitivity for a few days as your teeth adjust to no longer having braces.

Life After Braces

After orthodontic work, it takes a while for your teeth to “remember” their new positions. So, you’ll have to wear a retainer after braces to prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original misaligned state. In most cases, you’ll wear your retainer almost 24/7 at first. When your dentist determines that the risk of your teeth shifting has decreased, they’ll let you know that you can switch to only wearing the retainer at night. However, only make this decision with your dentist’s approval.

As you can see, there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to getting your braces taken off. You’ve already gotten through the hard part; you’re so close to finally having the confident, straight smile you deserve!
