You recently had a tooth removed and understand the importance of having it replaced as soon as possible. Allowing too much time to pass will only result in the potential for additional bone and tooth loss, but when can you receive dental implants after a tooth extraction in Uptown New Orleans? A local dentist explains how long you’ll need to wait before seeing a complete, fully restored smile once again.

What is the Timeline to Receive Dental Implants After a Tooth Extraction?

Unfortunately, your wait time for dental implants is largely based on the status of your jawbone and gum health. As nice as it would be to just insert an implant immediately following your tooth removal, it’s not always possible for most patients. On average, it is necessary to wait at least 10 weeks after your extraction to begin the process of receiving dental implants; however, there are exceptions to this rule.

The Same Appointment

If you are one of the fortunate individuals who have excellent gum health and enough bone density, there is a good chance your dentist can insert a dental implant post the same day as your tooth removal. Although the most common reason for this type of immediate placement is sudden trauma, the process remains the same for receiving this type of permanent prosthetic. Once the tooth is extracted, a titanium post is inserted into the bone before the gum tissue is closed around it. After 3-6 months of healing at home, you will return to have your metal abutment and customized dental crown attached. As a result of this immediate replacement, you can avoid any bone loss that might result in loose teeth or changes in your facial shape.

Two to Three Months Following Extraction

This short time frame following your extraction is typically required if you developed an infection or experienced damage to your gum tissue. Your mouth will need ample time to heal but not too much time, as bone loss most often begins to occur after the three-month mark. Once your dentist in Uptown New Orleans sees that your gum tissue is in better shape, they will have you come in to begin the process of receiving dental implants.

Three to Six Months After Tooth Removal

In the most severe cases where there is not enough bone to adequately support a titanium post or customized restoration, it will be necessary to undergo a bone graft after having a tooth removed. This process requires inserting grafting materials into the designated area and allowing the new and existing bone to strengthen over 3-6 months. Once your dentist believes your oral structure is ready for implants, you will return to have your titanium posts inserted into the appropriate areas of your jawbone before spending another 3-6 months healing at home.

Your dentist understands the urgency of replacing an extracted tooth. Even if you’re unable to receive dental implants the same day, you can trust that you will eventually have a fully functional smile soon enough.
