Your first visit to a New Orleans dentist: what to expect

Choosing a new dentist, especially after a long gap between visits, comes with more uncertainty than it should. Knowing what the first visit actually involves, rather than what you imagine it involves, makes it a lot easier to book.

Before you arrive

Most practices, this one included, send intake forms ahead of time so you can fill them out at home instead of in the waiting room. Bring a photo ID, a list of any medications you take, and any recent X-rays if you have them. If a concern has been on your mind, whether it's a chipped tooth, a nagging sensitivity, or cosmetic questions, write it down. It's easy to forget in the chair.

What happens at the visit itself

A first visit starts with a conversation, not a drill: what you want from your smile and your health, and anything that's worrying you. From there, a thorough exam with digital imaging gives a full picture. 3D scans, where available, let you see the same images the dentist is looking at, rather than taking their word for it.

The visit should end with a clear, written plan: what's recommended, what's optional, and what it costs, in plain language. Nothing should be started without your understanding and your okay. Treatment planning and treatment delivery are two different conversations, and a good first visit keeps them that way.

If it's been a while

If it's been years since your last visit, expect the exam to take a little longer and the plan to have more in it than you'd like. That's normal, and it's not a sales pitch. It's just what tends to accumulate when checkups lapse. A dentist who sequences that work into a realistic plan, rather than trying to do all of it at once, is doing right by you.
