Dental implant terms you should know in New OrleansIf you’re ready to replace your missing teeth with dental implants, you’re going to need to schedule a consultation with your dentist. During your appointment, they might use a few unfamiliar terms. It may sound like a foreign language, but you can understand exactly what your dentist is talking about. Here are 9 dental implant terms you should know in New Orleans.

1. Abutment

An abutment is a special fixture that’s attached to your implant post to secure your crown, bridge, or denture to your jawbone.

2. Abutment Teeth

Traditional bridges and partials are attached to adjacent teeth, also called the abutment teeth.

3. Crown

When envisioning a dental crown, you might see a silver-colored cap covering a tooth; however, there are many types for specific purposes. A crown can be used with a dental implant for single tooth replacement. It’s made of all-ceramic material to look like a real tooth.

4. Endosteal Implant

The American Academy of Periodontology reports the endosteal implant to be the most widely used in modern dentistry. They consist of small screws, cylinders, or plates that are directly placed into the jawbone to support at least one prosthetic tooth.

5. Eposteal Implant

An eposteal implant differs because it rests on the jawbone instead of being inserted into it. Although this method is considered outdated, it may be recommended for patients who have advanced bone resorption.

6. Osseointegration

This is a biological process that occurs to allow your bone to fuse to your dental implant. Overall, it strengthens the bone between living tissue and a load-bearing implant. Most dental implants are made of titanium because the material is biocompatible, so it integrates well with the bone.

7. Subperiosteal Implant

A subperiosteal implant is unique because it rests on top of the jaw but has a metal framework that protrudes through the gum. This allows it to hold the prosthetics in place. Often, this method is suggested for patients who have minimal bone height or can’t wear conventional dentures.

8. Titanium

Most modern dental implants are titanium because it provides several benefits, such as a minimal risk of allergic reaction. It is lightweight, while also very durable. When compared to other metals, it ossifies with the bone better to last for longer.

9. Zirconia

Although it’s rare, some patients can have issues with titanium. As a result, your dentist in New Orleans may recommend zirconia. They don’t have any prosthetic connections to reduce the rate of growth of bad bacteria. They are also tooth-colored to provide a more natural appearance.
