Shocked woman with her hand over her mouthDid you know that 1 in 6 Americans experiences a dental emergency every year? Knocked-out teeth, toothaches, and other urgent oral health issues can land you in the dentist’s chair. However, dental emergencies take many forms. Your dentist has seen it all over the years. Here are 4 shocking dental emergencies that are more common than you might think.

1. Sprouting Plants in the Mouth

Tomatoes, strawberries, and other fruits and vegetables containing small seeds can lead to an unusual situation. Believe it or not, there have been cases of patients with sprouting plants growing in their mouths. Tiny seeds can get trapped under the gum tissue or between the teeth. Since the mouth is a moist environment, a seed can have everything it needs to sprout.

2. Superglue Misshapes

Superglue is handy to have around the home for minor repairs, but it should never be used in your mouth. Many patients have turned to superglue and other adhesives for DIY solutions, like fixing broken dentures or bonding crowns over teeth. Unfortunately, this can lead to infections, allergic reactions, and more damage. Not to mention, glues and adhesives can contain toxic ingredients.

3. Calculus Bridges

If plaque is not removed, it hardens and turns to tartar. You can’t brush away tartar buildup. If it’s not removed by a dental professional regularly, it can create a calculus bridge. In some situations, a calculus Bridge can be the only thing holding teeth in place. If the bridge is removed, teeth can come out right along with it. There are reports of entire arches of teeth coming out in one calculus bridge.

4. DIY Teeth Filing

Many DIY dental solutions appear safe and effective, like drilling or filing teeth. However, they can cause irreversible damage. Dentists see a lot of DIY dental methods because of the availability of information online. It’s best to leave dental procedures to professionals.

Safeguard Your Smile From Dental Emergencies

You can’t always stop a dental emergency from occurring, but there are several things you can do to lessen your risk. You can avoid common and unusual oral health situations by following a few tips:

  • Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss every night. Brushing and flossing will keep your teeth and gums healthy. Brush after eating anything with small seeds, sugar, or sticky residue.
  • Protect Your Smile: Wear an athletic mouthguard if you play sports. If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, ask your dentist for a nightguard.
  • Visit Your Dentist: Visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll remove any plaque and tartar buildup. They will also examine your mouth to look for anything concerning to intervene before it turns into a big problem.

If you have a dental emergency, don’t be embarrassed if it’s a bit out of the ordinary. Your dentist has seen and heard it all. They will handle your situation with the utmost integrity.
