Chip Off the Old Block: Why a Chipped Tooth Is a Dental Emergency

Picture this: you’re crunching away on your favorite pretzel, and suddenly you feel something crumble that isn’t a part of your snack! You’ve just chipped a tooth. Now what? Your first instinct (after checking to make sure the damage isn’t too severe) is to continue eating. After all, if it’s not that big of a chip, it should be fine to use until it grows back, right? Wrong! Here’s why a chipped tooth means it’s time to see your emergency dentist, stat!

Do Tooth Chips Repair Themselves?

Many people don’t realize that though they are hard and similarly colored, your teeth are not bones. In fact, even though they’re not immune to damage, they’re much stronger than bones, and their hard outer enamel is actually the hardest substance in the human body! Still, because they cannot self-repair, you will need to see your dentist if they become injured.

How Do You Treat a Chipped Tooth?

How your dentist treats your chipped tooth depends on the severity of the damage. For minor chips, cosmetic dental bonding can quickly and painlessly rebuild the damaged area so that your tooth looks whole and is fully functional. This type of restoration typically lasts five or more years with proper use and care.

In the case of more severe chips, you may require a dental crown. This is a deluxe restoration that fits over your tooth like a cap and looks and feels just like a real tooth. It can be used just like one, too! With proper care and maintenance, your dental crown can last ten or more years.

What Happens if I Don’t Fix My Chipped Tooth?

Even if it doesn’t hurt, ignoring a chipped tooth is never a good idea. Depending on how deep the chip is, your tooth can be very vulnerable to infection and decay. Sharp edges can also pose a risk to your tongue and cheeks. Though it may not be noticeable when you smile, chips can still be very dangerous, and if left unrepaired could eventually lead to tooth loss or require an extraction!

Remember, even if you’re not in pain, it is important to fix a chipped tooth no matter how small the chip may be. Don’t wait until your regular dental check-up. Contact your emergency dentist as soon as possible and protect your tooth and soft tissue from further damage!
